Hello, fellow travelers and retirement enthusiasts! We’re thrilled to share the highlights of our first RV adventure in early May 2024. With “Large Marge” packed and ready, we crossed the border into southern Pennsylvania to explore the beautiful area of Ohiopyle and visit the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed estates: Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater.

Our journey began with an overnight stay in the charming community of Slippery Rock, thanks to Harvest Hosts. The small-town charm was a perfect start to our trip, providing us with a peaceful night’s rest before the exciting days ahead.

Morning at Kentuck Knob

Our first stop was Kentuck Knob, nestled on a large knob of land offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. This architectural gem was originally built for dairy owner I.N. Hagan and his wife, who desired a home designed with Wright’s minimalistic principles. The house features Wright’s signature hexagonal designs, creating a unique and harmonious space that blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

Walking through Kentuck Knob, we were struck by Wright’s ability to integrate architecture with nature. The house felt like an extension of the landscape, with natural light pouring in through strategically placed windows and organic materials used throughout. It was a serene and inspiring start to our day.

Afternoon at Fallingwater

In the afternoon, we headed to Lynn’s long-awaited dream destination: Fallingwater. Ever since her days at Carleton University, Lynn had wanted to see the famous Kaufmann residence, and it did not disappoint. Fallingwater is renowned for its daring design, perched dramatically over a waterfall and seamlessly blending into the forested landscape.

The tour was a surreal experience. We marveled at how the house seemed to float above the rushing water, with cantilevered terraces extending out into the air. Wright’s genius in creating a living space that felt both part of the natural world and a masterpiece of modern architecture was truly evident. Every room, every view from the windows, was meticulously designed to bring the outside in, making us feel like we were part of the environment rather than separate from it.

Reflections on Our Journey

Our visit to Kentuck Knob and Fallingwater was more than just sightseeing; it was an inspiring journey through architectural history and natural beauty. Both estates left us in awe of Wright’s vision and his ability to create spaces that are not only functional but also deeply connected to their surroundings.

This trip was a wonderful start to our RV adventures, and we’re excited to continue exploring and sharing our experiences with you. If you’re planning a trip to southern Pennsylvania, we highly recommend visiting these architectural treasures. They are truly worth the journey.
