Bon Echo Provincial Park is a natural gem nestled in the heart of Eastern Ontario, just a few hours' drive from Toronto. Our journey was made seamless by taking the 407 ETR through Toronto, allowing us to bypass the city's congestion and arrive refreshed.
The park boasts a rich history dating back thousands of years, with the Mazinaw Rock adorned with over 260 Indigenous pictographs, a testament to the area's cultural significance. This massive rock formation, towering 100 meters above Mazinaw Lake, is a breathtaking sight and a highlight of the park.[1][2]
Geographically, Bon Echo is situated within the Canadian Shield, a vast expanse of ancient rock formations that stretch across much of Eastern Canada. The park's rugged terrain, dotted with pristine lakes, dense forests, and rocky outcrops, offers a true wilderness experience.[2]
For outdoor enthusiasts, Bon Echo is a paradise. The park features an extensive network of hiking trails, ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging backcountry treks like the Abes and Essens Trail.[1][2] The High Pines Trail and The Shield Trail are excellent options for those seeking a moderate hike through diverse landscapes.[2]
Canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities, with the opportunity to paddle along the picturesque Mazinaw Lake and explore the Kishkebus Canoe Route, a 21km loop that offers stunning vistas and a chance to view the Indigenous pictographs up close.[1][3]
While our recent visit was hampered by a full day of rain, we were undeterred and eager to return.

The park's campsites, including those suitable for large RVs like our beloved Large Marge, offer ample space and privacy, especially during weekdays in late May when we visited.[1] However, we've heard that summer weekends can be bustling with canoeists and stand-up paddleboarders.
Despite the rain and pesky mosquitoes, which are to be expected during this time of year, our brief stay at Bon Echo left us yearning for more. One highlight worth mentioning was the park's exceptional shower facilities, which provided a refreshing respite after our rainy adventures.[4]
Safe Travels
